What is the CSIR NET Exam?
CSIR full form is the “Council of Scientific and Industrial Research“.
CSIR-UGC NET is a national-level exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) to select candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and to check their eligibility for Lectureship (LS)/ Assistant Professor in Indian universities and colleges.
CSIR was established by the Government of India in September 1942 as an autonomous body that has emerged as the largest research and development organisation in India .
CSIR UGC NET Exam is conducted twice a year in the month of June and December. For the selection of Lecturers and for Junior Research Fellowship opportunity for Indian job aspirants. NTA conducts the Joint CSIR UGC NET Exam from December 2019 onwards, earlier it used to be conducted by the CSIR.
Candidates are selected as researchers and lecturers who can help the Indian education industry by contributing with their knowledge and skills.

16th October 2020: CSIR NET exam has been postponed by the National Testing Agency. CSIR UGC NET Eligibility Criteria 2020

CSIR UGC NET Exam will be a computer-based test (CBT). Exam Pattern is different for different subjects. Please are advised to check the exam pattern as it may help them in their exam preparation. Please find below subject wise exam pattern.
- (i) CSIR NET Exam Pattern for Chemical Sciences
- (ii) CSIR NET Exam Pattern for Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences
- (iii) CSIR NET Exam Pattern for Life Sciences
- (iv) CSIR NET Exam Pattern for Mathematical Sciences
- (v) CSIR NET Exam Pattern for Physical Sciences
(i) CSIR NET Exam Pattern for Chemical Sciences
CSIR NET Chemical Sciences question paper will contain 120 Multiple Choice Questions and 3 hours will be given to complete the test. There will be three parts which are Part A, Part B, and Part C.
Note:
- Marks for each question in Part A and Part B are 2 while in Part C marks for each question are 4.
- For a wrong answer, 0.5 marks will be deducted in Part A and Part B while 1 mark will be deducted in Part C.
(ii) CSIR NET Exam Pattern for Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences
CSIR NET question paper for Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences will have 150 multiple choice questions and 3 hours will be given to complete the test.
Note:
- Each question in Part A and B carries two marks weightage.
- Each question in Part C carries four marks weightage.
- There is a negative marking of 0.5 marks for every wrong answer in Part A, Part B, and 1.32 marks negative marking in Part C.
(iii) CSIR NET Exam Pattern for Life Sciences
CSIR NET Life Sciences question paper will have 145 multiple choice questions and 3 hours will be given to complete the test.
Note:
- Each question in Part A and B carries two marks and each question in Part C carries four marks.
- There is a negative marking of 0.5 marks for every wrong answer in Part-A, Part B, and 1 marks negative marking in Part-C of the exam.
(iv) CSIR NET Exam Pattern for Mathematical Sciences
CSIR NET Mathematical Sciences question paper will have 120 multiple choice questions and total of 3 hours will be given to complete the test. MCQs out of which candidates need to attempt 60 questions. Candidates need to complete the exam in three hours duration.
Note:
- Each question in Part A carries two marks, questions in Part B carries 3 marks and questions in Part C carries 4.75 marks
- There is a negative marking of 0.5 marks in Part A, 0.75 marks in Part B, and no negative marking in Part C.
- Please note that in Part C there may be one or more than one correct answer for each question.
(v) CSIR NET Exam Pattern for Physical Sciences
CSIR NET Physical Sciences question paper will contain 75 multiple choice questions and 3 hours will be given to complete the test.
Note:
- Each question in Part A carries two marks, each question in Part B carries 3.5 marks and each question in Part C carries 5 marks.
- There is a negative marking of 0.5 marks in Part A, 0.875 marks in Part B, and 1.25 marks negative marking in Part C. and 1.25 marks for Part-A, -B, and -C, respectively.

Candidates can apply online by visiting the official website from 16th March to 16th May 2020. Candidates can apply only in “online mode”. Applications submitted through other modes will not be accepted.

Complete the online application process by entering your contact details, Personal Details, and others asked information.
Upload Photograph and Signature
Candidates have to upload scanned images of their passport size photograph and signature in prescribed specifications. The photograph must be a jpg format image and 10 kb to 200 kb in size and Signature must be a jpg format image and 4 kb to 30 kb in size.
