CDS is also known as the “Chief of Defence Staff” in English and “चीफ ऑफ डिफेंस स्टाफ” in Hindi. He is responsible to provides strategic leadership to all three forces in India. CDS is the head of the Military advisory board and responsible to share special recommendations directly to the Defence Minister of India. General Bipin Rawat is the first Chief of Defence Staff in India.
The “Combined Defence Services” exam also known as the “CDS Exam” is a national level competitive exam conducted by UPSC twice a year for admission in Indian Military Academy (IMA), Air Force Academy (AFA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Officers’ Training Academy (OTA).
UPSC has streamlined the Combined Defence Services examination process and the major step was taken by the UPSC is to give candidates two chances in a year to apply. UPSC has decided to schedule CDS papers in February and November every year. Notification for both is made available four months before the exam date.
Selection in the exam is done based on the performance in the written exam, SSB Interview, and personality test. If candidates clear all three rounds then he gets a chance to get the world-class training opportunity in any one of the training academies in India.
Candidates can submit their preference of the training academy while submitting the online application form. Generally, the training period is 6 months. After the 6 months of training, candidates are deployed to the Indian Army or Navy or Air Force as an officer.
